Alstom has unveiled its new Citadis Spirit light rail vehicle (LRV) for the North American market at the ongoing 2013 American Public Transportation Association Rail Conference in Philadelphia, US.
The LRVs are equipped with new features to meet the transportation needs of North American cities.
The Citadis Spirit features 100% low floor design and the ability to operate at speeds of about 100km/h, which will help in providing both a streetcar service in mixed traffic as well as a commuter service.
The LRV's low-floor boarding and interior, which is free of steps, offers better accessibility, as well as a safer and more comfortable ride to users of all ages.
The new Citadis Spirit can be paired with one of Alstom's off-wire power supply systems to protect city views and reduce the impact on the environment.
Alstom Transportation president Guillaume Mehlman said in developing the Citadis Spirit, the company recognised that every city has a different aim for public transportation.
"Our design and styling department can also customise the train's interior and exterior design to embody each city's unique character," Mehlman said. "Each new Citadis Spirit will be shaped by and a reflection of the community it serves."
Manufacturing of the new Citadis Spirit will be carried out in North America in 2015, with final assembly to be localised close to end-users and municipalities.
Earlier in February 2013, Alstom won a 400m euros contract from the Rideau Transit Group (RTG) consortium to supply 34 Citadis Spirit LRVs to the Ottawa Light Rapid Transit (OLRT) system in Canada, as well as providing maintenance services for 30 years.
